Avène ‘Mask Apaisant Hydratant’ Product Review

The penultimate product in the Limited Edition Birchbox is the Avène Soothing Moisture Mask. I’ve not heard of the brand before, but I love a face mask and I’m looking forward to using this. The Birchbox card says about it:

“Think of this as a big drink of water for your skin! Rich in Avène thermal spring water, it restores comfort and suppleness in just 10 minutes.”

This Riche en Eau Thermale d’Avène mask is a 30ml sample, and I imagine will last me a few weeks. The full size product is 50ml, and is widely available online. The best price I found was £11.50 at lookfantastic.com for the full size 50ml tube. Based on a similar pricing structure, this mask is 23p per ml, or £6.90 for the sample.

The mask comes in an upright tube made out of white plastic. The plastic is sturdy and glossy, which makes this feel like a good quality item. The packaging is mainly in French, which I do not understand, but uses a peach and grey colour scheme for the text colour and and visual design. This tube has a lid to save unscrewing, to use simply lift the lid and squeeze.

Directions: Apply generously then remove with a cotton pad.

I clean, cleanse and tone my skin and apply the Avène mask in place of my usual moisturiser. The mask is a white coloured cream, and is thick. Based on the colour scheme and the graphic on the front of the packaging I hoped it was a really peachy smelling mask. I do get a hint of peach from the cream, but it’s not the fresh wash of peach I was expecting, there is something artificial about it. I apply the mask generously to my face. I’ve said this a lot recently, but it felt plasticky and heavy on my face, as if I’d smeared Savlon or some similar cream on my skin. When the time was up I removed the mask from my skin using a cotton pad.

It’s been about three hours since I took the mask off, and my skin feels greasy, uncomfortable and is slightly itchy. I have mentioned in the past the my skin is a little picky, I think this is one of those products that are just too heavy for my personal needs. I’m not going to throw this sample out, I’m going on holiday in a few weeks and this will be perfect to help my skin rehydrate when it’s dealing with the extreme dryness of sun, salt and chlorine – I just couldn’t work it into my regular skincare routine.
